If it’s time for you to replace your boiler, then you should have a good think about what to do next rather than make any snap decisions. Why is this such an important step? Well for starters, your heating bills make up for around 60{5dfef5ee4bdb9e4ccd342f82740f8c4bc135a5cd1b195e83ba9a769acb7c5569} of what you spend annually on energy bills, so choosing the right boiler is crucial.
The correct choice of boiler can save you money in terms of fuel efficiency, but there are a number of vital factors to take into consideration before you decide. Here are a few helpful pointers to steer you in the right direction.
What type of boiler should I consider?
It all depends on the type of fuel that supplies your home. If you’re on a mains gas supply, it stands to reason that a gas boiler is likely to be the cheapest option available to you.
Even if you’re not yet connected to gas, the local gas network in your area may be able to arrange (and help with the cost of getting) a new connection. However, if mains gas is not readily available, you could consider a biomass boiler or a heat pump. There are renewable heat incentives available that could make this a cost-efficient option for you too.
You could also consider an oil heating boiler if gas is not an option, and while historically oil fuel has been a more expensive alternative, prices have improved of late.
Combi or not?
A combi (or combination) boiler is both a high-efficiency water heater and central heating boiler. Combined in one compact unit, it’s a great space saver for your home too. Most old gas and oil boilers heat up a separate tank or cylinder of hot water instead. So when you replace your boiler you have a choice – you can buy a new regular boiler and keep the tank/cylinder, or go to a combi boiler and save yourself some space.
Family home?
The number of people living in your house should have an influence on whether you decide to have a combi boiler or not. Larger families will use more hot water for bathing, showering and heating more rooms than a smaller number of occupants, so a regular boiler with a separate cylinder might make for a more sensible option. Smaller households using less hot water are likely to be better off with a combi boiler.
